How much does website maintenance cost?

Most people asking this have just paid for a website, or are about to, and have realised the bill does not stop at launch. The honest answer is a wide range, and the useful part is knowing what sits inside it.

How much does website maintenance cost per month?

Published guides, nearly all written by agencies and hosting companies with a stake in the price, put small-business maintenance at about $50 to $300 a month. Some give lower figures for very simple sites, and online shops run well above that. Elementor's guide lists shared hosting at around $2 to $15 a month, which tells you how much of a "plan" can be hosting alone.

Treat every range as rough. They describe different kinds of work, and several repeat each other's figures. One agency guide makes a point worth remembering: below roughly $50 a month, ask what you are actually getting, because it is usually only hosting.

What is the website maintenance cost per year?

Multiply the monthly figure by twelve, then check three annual items that are easy to miss. Your domain name renews yearly. A security certificate, which puts the padlock in the browser, is often free with good hosting but is sometimes billed separately. And any paid plugins or themes carry their own yearly licences. Ask for a list of every recurring charge, with the date each one renews.

What does website maintenance include?

A plan worth paying for names its work. Look for these:

  • Hosting that is fast, secure and backed up.
  • Domain and certificate renewals, handled for you so nothing lapses.
  • Software updates to the site's platform and any plugins, applied carefully rather than blindly.
  • Backups you can restore from, tested occasionally.
  • Monitoring, so someone notices when the site goes down.
  • Small changes: a new photograph, a changed phone number, a fresh page.
  • A person who replies to you, with a stated response time.

A hand-built site with no plugin ecosystem has less to patch than a platform assembled from many parts, which is one reason the monthly figure can be lower. We set the two routes side by side in How much does a custom website cost compared with Squarespace or Wix?

Do you need a maintenance plan at all?

Sometimes not. A small brochure site on a well-managed host may need little beyond renewing the domain and hosting each year. You can reasonably skip a plan then, as long as someone knows how to reach the site if it breaks.

You should want one when the site takes bookings or payments, uses several plugins, or is how clients find you. In those cases an outage or a security problem costs more than the plan, and a stranger fixing it at short notice will charge more than the person who built it.

How much do web designers charge for website maintenance by the hour?

Some designers bill hourly instead of monthly. Hourly suits unpredictable one-off jobs; a monthly plan suits steady upkeep and gives you a fixed cost. Whichever you choose, ask what counts as a "small change", how quickly requests are handled, and what happens if you want to leave.

What should you ask before you agree?

  1. What exactly is included each month, in a list?
  2. Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the site files?
  3. How quickly will a problem be fixed, and by whom?
  4. Are backups included, and have they ever been restored?
  5. What does a change outside the plan cost?
  6. Can I cancel, and will you hand over everything if I do?

The ownership question matters most. Your domain should be registered in your name, and you should be able to take the site elsewhere. Maintenance is also part of the wider cost of a site, which we cover in How much does a website redesign cost?

How we handle it

At Bay House Digital in Annapolis, every site ends in a fixed-price proposal. Care after launch is optional, from $450 a month, and the proposal lists what it covers. The site stays yours whether or not you take it. Prices are on the pricing page.

Common questions

How much does website maintenance cost per month?

Guides written by agencies and hosting companies mostly land between about $50 and $300 a month for a small-business site. The spread comes from what is included: hosting alone is cheap, while hosting plus updates, backups, security checks and a person making changes costs more.

What does website maintenance include?

At minimum: hosting, your domain name, a security certificate, software updates, backups and a way to restore them. A fuller plan adds monitoring, small content changes and a named person who answers when something breaks.

Do I need a maintenance plan at all?

Not always. A simple site on a well-managed host may need little beyond renewing the domain and hosting. A site with a booking system, shop or plugins needs regular attention, and a plan is cheaper than an emergency repair.
