How much does a book cover design cost?

A professionally designed book cover usually costs somewhere between a couple of hundred dollars and well over a thousand, and the spread is wide because the word "cover" covers very different jobs. A premade template with your title dropped in is one product. A custom, illustrated wrap for print, with spine and back, is another. Spiffing Publishing's UK guide says the same thing from the other side of the Atlantic: from nothing to well over £1,000, depending mainly on how custom the work is.

How much does a book cover design cost?

Pricing guides aimed at self-publishing authors tend to land in a few bands. These are published ranges, not quotes, and individual designers price above and below them:

Kind of coverWhat you getTypical range
PremadeA finished design adapted with your title and nameabout $150 to $350 (Creativindie)
Custom, ebook plus printA design made for your book, with spine and backabout $500 to $800 (BookCovers.com, citing Blurb)
Illustrated or seriesCommissioned artwork, matching covers across booksusually higher, quoted per project

If you see covers for a tenth of these prices, ask what is missing: a print wrap, the layered source files, a licence for the images, or a second round of changes.

How much should a book cover design cost, and what changes the price?

  • Custom against premade. Original artwork takes a designer's time, and you are paying for it.
  • Print as well as ebook. A paperback needs a spine and back cover sized to your page count and printer, which is more work than a single front image.
  • Illustration. A commissioned illustration costs more than a typographic or photographic cover.
  • Series. Matching covers need a system, not just one good image.
  • Licensed images and fonts. Someone has to pay for them, and the licence should cover commercial book use.
  • Revisions. Find out how many rounds are included.

What makes a book cover design good, not just expensive?

On Amazon your cover is a small thumbnail among thousands. It has to signal the genre at a glance and stay readable at stamp size. A good designer will ask which books yours sits beside, then design so that a reader browsing that shelf recognises where it belongs. That judgment is what you are paying for, more than the artwork itself.

Technical details matter too. Amazon's own cover image guidelines give the ideal ebook cover as 2,560 pixels high by 1,600 wide, and a designer should deliver files that meet them without being asked.

Is it legal to use AI for a book cover?

It is not illegal, but it is less settled than it looks. The US Copyright Office's report on copyrightability concludes that prompts alone do not give you authorship of what an AI produces, so a cover built only from generated images may carry little or no copyright protection for you. A designer who uses AI as one tool among several, and makes real creative choices on top, is in a different position. Ask directly how it is used and what the designer will put in writing.

What should you ask before you hire a cover designer?

  1. What exactly do I receive? Front only, or the full wrap; which file types; whether you get editable source files.
  2. Is the fee fixed, and how many revisions are included?
  3. Are the images and fonts licensed for commercial book use? Ask to see the licence.
  4. Have you designed in my genre? Look at finished books, not only mock-ups.
  5. Who owns the design? The agreement should say you do, or exactly what you may do with it.

What does it cost with Bay House?

We do not sell covers on their own. The cover is part of our Become an Author packages, alongside the drafting and editing, publishing on Amazon under your own account and an author website. Our published prices are on the pricing page: Essentials, which includes the book and an author website, starts at $10,000, Author Studio at $25,000, and Author Platform can run to $50,000, each quoted after a first conversation.

If you are weighing a package against hiring each person yourself, see full-service author package or hiring separately. For the other costs in the journey, what it really costs to self-publish a novel and how much a book editor costs cover the rest.

Common questions

How much should a book cover cost?

For a professional cover, published guides cluster around $500 to $800 for a custom design, with premade covers well below that and illustrated or series work above it. A fixed quote that names the files you receive matters more than the exact number.

Is a premade cover good enough?

Often, yes, for a first book in a clear genre. The trade-off is that the same artwork is sold to more than one author, so ask the designer how many times a premade design has been used and whether they will retire it once it is yours.

Can I use an AI-generated image for my cover?

You can, but check the rules first. The US Copyright Office has said that prompts alone do not make you the author of the output, so a cover built only from AI images may not be something you can protect or license. Ask any designer how they use AI and what they will warrant.
