How much does a book editor cost?

A professional edit of a full-length book usually costs between a couple of thousand dollars and a few thousand more, depending on how deep the editing goes. Reedsy's 2026 pricing guide, based on its own marketplace, puts an 80,000-word book at roughly $1,920 to $4,560. Those are marketplace averages, not quotes, and individual editors price above and below them.

The price tracks the kind of editing, so start there.

How much does a book editor cost?

Editors usually quote per word, because the work scales with length. Reedsy's 2026 per-word figures give a sense of the spread:

Kind of editingWhat it coversReedsy 2026, per word
DevelopmentalStructure, plot or argument, pacing, charactersabout $0.026 to $0.053
CopyeditingGrammar, consistency, clarity, styleabout $0.020 to $0.032
ProofreadingFinal check for typos and formatting slipsaround $0.014

Other sources publish different numbers. The Editorial Freelancers Association, a professional body, publishes an annual rate chart built from a survey of its members, and it is the better reference once you start comparing quotes. Neither it nor Reedsy is a price list for your book. Treat both as a way to tell whether a quote is reasonable.

How much does a book editor charge per hour?

Some editors bill by the hour, particularly for a light read or a manuscript with unusual needs. The trouble is that you cannot know the total in advance. If an editor prefers hourly billing, ask for an estimate of the hours and a cap you must approve before they exceed it. For a whole manuscript, a fixed fee for named work is easier to plan around.

How much does a novel editor cost, and what changes the price?

  • Length. Almost every quote starts with word count.
  • The depth of the edit. A developmental edit means rethinking the book. A proofread means checking it.
  • The state of the draft. A manuscript that needs heavy work takes longer, and a good editor will say so after reading a sample.
  • The editor. Experience in your genre, a track record of finished books and availability all show up in the fee.
  • Timing. Rush jobs cost more, and the best editors are often booked months ahead.

What should you ask before you hire an editor?

  1. What exactly is included? Which pass, how many read-throughs, how many rounds of questions.
  2. Can I see a sample edit? Many editors will edit a few pages so you can judge their touch.
  3. Is the fee fixed, and when is it due? Get the total, the payment schedule and the delivery date in writing.
  4. Who owns the edited manuscript? The book remains yours, and the agreement should say so.
  5. What if we disagree? Good editors explain their changes, and you decide what stays.

If you are comparing a full package against hiring separately, our piece on a full-service author package or hiring an editor, cover designer and web designer separately walks through the trade-off.

Is it worth paying for an editor?

Almost always, yes, for a book you plan to sell. Readers forgive a plain cover more readily than a confusing plot or a page of typos, and reviews tend to say so. The real question is which pass to buy and in which order: structure first, sentences next, the final proof last. Skipping to a proofread on a draft that still has structural problems spends money on the cheapest pass while the expensive problem remains.

Common questions

How much does a novel editor cost?

Reedsy's 2026 figures work out to roughly $1,920 to $4,560 for an 80,000-word book, depending on which kind of editing you buy. A developmental edit sits at the top of that range and a proofread at the bottom, and a full job usually combines more than one pass.

Do book editors charge by the word or by the hour?

Both exist, but per word or per project is more common for a full manuscript, because it lets you see the total before you commit. Hourly rates are harder to budget, so ask for an estimate with a cap if an editor prefers to bill that way.

Do I need every kind of editing?

Not always. A first-time novelist usually benefits from a developmental or line edit and then a copyedit and proofread. A book that has already been through several drafts may need less. A good editor will read a sample and tell you honestly what the manuscript needs.
