How much does a ghostwriter cost to write a book?

Hiring a ghostwriter to write a whole book usually costs tens of thousands of dollars for nonfiction and less for a novel. Reedsy, which publishes figures from its own freelance marketplace, lists $18,000 to $50,000 for nonfiction and $3,500 to $18,000 for novels in its 2026 guide. Picture books sit lower, at $1,500 to $5,000. Those are marketplace figures, not quotes, and Reedsy itself notes that some ghostwriters charge far more.

The number only means something once you know what it buys.

How much does a ghostwriter cost?

Kind of bookReedsy's 2026 range
Novel$3,500 to $18,000
Nonfiction$18,000 to $50,000
Business and management$30,000 to $48,000
Self-help$24,000 to $42,000
Picture book$1,500 to $5,000

Writers with long bestseller records can charge well beyond these ranges, and so can firms that bundle a ghostwriter with an editor and a project manager.

Why do ghostwriter prices vary so much?

Four things move the price most.

  • Length and complexity. A 90,000-word memoir with research costs more than a short, tightly plotted novel.
  • Who the writer is. Credits, years of experience and how many books they have finished all show up in the fee.
  • How much of the thinking they do. Interviewing you and shaping your ideas is different work from polishing pages you have written.
  • What is included. Some fees stop at a manuscript. Others cover editing, a cover and publishing.

Ghostwriters commonly price by the project, though some charge by the word or the hour. For a book, a fixed fee in writing is easier to plan around than an open-ended hourly rate.

What should a ghostwriting contract settle?

Settle these before any money moves:

  1. Who owns the manuscript. The US Copyright Office notes that a transfer of copyright generally has to be in a signed writing, so the contract should say plainly who owns the finished book.
  2. Credit. Whether the writer is named, thanked or kept anonymous.
  3. What is delivered and when, including how many rounds of revisions you get.
  4. Payment. The total, the schedule and what happens if the project stops.
  5. Confidentiality for your story and your notes.

Because ownership is at stake, have a lawyer who knows publishing read the contract. Our piece on telling a real publishing service from a bad one lists the contract warning signs worth checking, whoever you hire.

Is a ghostwriter the only way to get a book written?

No. A ghostwriter writes the book for you, often from interviews. Some authors want to stay closer to the page than that. A collaborative studio works through the outline and the chapters with you, so every decision stays yours and your name goes on the cover.

That is how our Become an Author package works: we draft with you, chapter by chapter, using AI to move quickly, then edit, design the cover and publish on Amazon under your own account. We explain the model in Can you write and publish a novel with AI? It is not ghostwriting, and we say so up front, because the right choice depends on how much of the writing you want to do yourself.

What does good help look like?

A good writer or studio asks about your book before they mention a price. They read what you have, tell you honestly whether the scope fits your budget and quote a fixed fee for named work. They put ownership and credit in writing, show you books they have helped finish and never promise sales. If a quote seems far below the ranges above, ask who is actually writing it.

Common questions

How much does a ghostwriter cost for a novel?

Reedsy's 2026 data gives $3,500 to $18,000 for a novel, with fantasy and science fiction near the upper half of that range. A writer with a strong track record, or a longer or more complex book, will cost more.

Do I own the book if a ghostwriter writes it?

Only if your written agreement says so. The US Copyright Office explains that a copyright transfer generally must be in a signed writing, so have the contract state who owns the finished manuscript, and have a lawyer read it.

Is there a cheaper way to get a book written with help?

Yes. Some studios work with you chapter by chapter rather than writing the book for you, which changes both the price and who the author is. Ask exactly who writes what, and what you pay for each part.
